OREGON CITY HISTORY

The first incorporated city west of the Mississippi was Oregon City. It was Established in 1829 by
Dr. John McLoughlin. Started as a lumber mill near Willamette Falls, it was later designated as the territorial
capital of Oregon. Visit the museums and historical buildings and get a glimpse of pioneer life in Oregon territory.

ARTS & CULTURE
The Clackamas Repertory Theatre performs in the Osterman Theatre/Niemeyer Center on the campus
of Clackamas Community College. Every year three different theatrical productions are performed to entertain
many audiences. Enjoy a nice variety of art galleries, including the Oregon City Municipal Elevator (a public art project)

HERITAGE
McLoughlin House was the home of Dr. John McLoughlin, the "Father of Oregon". It is operated by the National Parks
Service. Built in 1845 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Some interesting museums include:
The Stevens-Crawford Heritage House, The Museum of the Oregon Territory and the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive
Center.

RECREATION & LEISURE
Oregon City has over 20 parks including the Clackamas River Trail and a skateboard park.
Oregon City Farmers Market is open May through October, with vendors selling a wide variety from produce and flowers
to cheese and wine. Enjoy live music, activities for children, and food booths.
Take a trolley ride on the Oregon City Trolley it's free and runs from Mid-June through Labor Day. Enjoy a day of golf at one of two
golf courses, or take the kids swimming at the public pool. The Hopkins Demonstration Forest encompasses 140 acres with 3
miles of trails, interpretive exhibits, covered picnic areas, drinking water and a amphitheater.

SCHOOLS:
There are 16 schools in the Oregon City School District. This includes one high school, two middle schools,
ten elementary schools and three charter schools
Clackamas Community College is in the city. Other nearby colleges and universities include Lewis and Clark
College, Portland State University, George Fox University and Clark College.
